- Heard Around the Track
July 6, 2002 - All in all, PA made a great showing in
the 2002 Outdoor season, landing two athletes as top of their
respective events in the Dyestat Elite Rankings, and
grabbing top five spots with six individuals and two relays.

July 5, 2002 -
Dyestat, the national home
of US HS T&F, points out that for a few days ending late
morning July 5, the Foot Locker XC web
site listed San Diego as the site of the 2003 high school
XC championships December 14. The link has now been changed
to contain the date, but no location. The meet, was the Kinney
Foot Locker Championships from 1979 until Foot Locker bought
Kinney in 1993, moved to Disney World in 1997. It would be held
this year in Balboa Park, San Diego. There has been no official
announcement, according to Dyestat.
July 2, 2002 - Another tragedy strikes
a member of the PA T&F community Saturday June 29, 2002
as Glen Mills' Omain Gullette was shot and killed in
a drive-by shooting near his home in Southwest Philadelphia.
A recent graduate of the Delaware County school, Gullette had
been the Student Government President his senior year. He was
an All-State football player who was headed to Syracuse University
on a full scholarship. In T&F, he was 2nd in the SP in 2001
Outdoor States, and 3rd this past indoor season. The full story

June 1, 2002 - At the NCAA Division I Meet @ LSU, former
PA prep stars Serene Ross (Wilmington Area) a senior
competing for Purdue, and Kristin Price (Penn-Trafford)
an NC State sophomore, posted exceptional performances. Ross
simply set a new American Record on 5/30 in the Javelin with
a throw of 59.64m (195-08), to break the record of Lynda Blutreich
(58.61m). Price pulled off an incredible distance All-American
performance, taking the 10,000m Championship 5/29 with her 34:26.63.
She then came back 5/31 to get 3rd in the 5,000m with a time
of 16:01.25, less than eight seconds out of 1st. DI Results.
On Friday, 5/24, former Providence All-American (XC Division
I 15th 1997) Rachel Hixson (Penncrest HS, Media) earned
a Division II All-American certificate running in her final
college meet for West Chester University, finishing 4th in the
3000 Steeplechase in 11:02.52. Former Quakertown star Kathy
Breisch, running for Edinboro Univiversity, finished
6th in 11:15.35, also earning All-American. Link to full DII

23, 2002 - Reaction was swift and loud from PA coaches and athletes
about the PIAA selection of Hershey as the site for the next
3 PIAA XC State Championships. Read the release. And

April 19, 2002 - Angie Saterstad has
been reinstated to her team following a favorable ruling by
a PIAA District III Rules Committee Hearing on Wednesday,

April 18, 2002 -
Penn State University lands the previous two PIAA AAA Boys
XC State Champs, plus a transfer from Kent State - Great Valley's
Eamon Brazunus. Shawn Cavanaugh of Mount Lebanon (2000) and
Dan Mazzocco of Baldwin (2001) commit to run fo the Nittany
Lions. Cavanaugh, however, will not be competing the rest
of his HS career, after breaking his foot while running. We'll
miss ya Shawn.
April 9, 2002 - An elite PA runner has been locked out of
her team's practices and meets as her school district confirms
an investigation is underway. MORE.

March 4, 2002 - Steve Craig, North Penn, says he's committing
to Duke.PA Elites on National Weekly Honor List - Dyestat
Nike Athlete of the Week#8 thru 2/14 includes four PA girls
as honorable mention: Karina Francis PA jr - 7.46 60m US#3t;
Tiffany Abney PA jr - 54.16 400m US#2; Sheena Gordon - 5-10

23, 2002 - 2000 PA Pole Vault Champ Kevin Dare of State College,
was killed Saturday, 2/23 while competing at the Big 10 Championships
at the University of Minnesota. A sophomore from State College,
Dare, 19, fell head first into the box on a miss at 15-9 at
approximately 2:40 p.m. CT. After being treated by EMTs on
site at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse, he was taken
to the Hennepin County Medical Center where he was pronounced
dead a short time later as a result of a fatal head trauma.

February 22, 2002 - Track Official/Starter Carl Stoltz was
honored at the Meet of Champs 2/22 for donating his expertise
and time to the DVGTCA for the past five years.
February 14, 2002 - Dyestat Nike Athlete
of the Week#7 thru 2/7 includes four PA girls as honorable
mention: Karina Francis PA jr - 6.96 55m US#1 (first under
7.00 this season); Juliette Poussot PA sr - 25.13 200m US#9;
Tiffany Abney PA jr - 56.23 400m US#5; Danielle Rodgers PA

11, 2002 - Former Pennsylvania prep stars perform well at
Winter XC Championships in Washington 2/9-10. Amy Rudolph
(Kane HS), made the US team with her 6th place finish in the
Senior Women's 8k in 27:18. Rudolph will represent the US
in the World XC Championships in Dublin, Ireland in March.
Former AAA State XC Champ Paige Miller (Wissahickon), finished
13th in the Junior Women's 6k in 22:21. Former PA 3200 State
Champ Ryan Sheehan (Baldwin) was 17th in the Junior Men's
8k in 26:05. Another Baldwin grad and former State Champ,
Carol Zajac-Tynan, was 18th in the Senior Women's 8k in 28:50,
and 22nd in the Senior Women's 4k in 14:06. Brian Sell (Northern
Bedford) was 23rd in the Senior Men's 12k in 38:00. Former
AAA XC State Champ Nick MacFalls (Cedar Crest) was 23rd in

February 1, 2002 - In a race where the entire field finished
within ten seconds, Baldwin's Dan Mazzocco ran 4:31.08 at
the prestigious Millrose Games in the High School Mile, finishing

January 21, 2002 - Dan Mazzocco, Baldwin, accepts invitation
to Millrose Mile 2/1 in NYC. With his 4:21.72 at Saturday's
Princeton Relays, Baldwin's Dan Mazzocco has qualified for
the prestigious Boys' High School Mile at the Millrose Games
Febuary 1 at Madison Square Garden in NYC. The race goes off
at 8:35 pm, just before the National Anthem and the famed
Wanamaker Mile. Mazzocco becomes the second Pennsylvanian
to qualfiy in two years, after The Baldwin School's Julia
Pudlin accomplished the feat last year, also after winning
at Princeton. Editor: Must be something in the Baldwin
name : )
January 24, 2002 - Josh Hannum, Strath Haven, changed his
mind this week after a visit to Penn State last weekend. He
will now play football for Joe PA at Penn State. Hannum had
stuck by Notre Dame after a firing, and a resignation of two
head coaches, but kept his options open. The Philadelphia
Inquirer reported earlier this week that the visit to Happy
Valley had changed his mind.
January 24, 2002 - Steve Breaston, the state medalist hurdler
from Woodland Hills, to Michigan for football.
January 21, 2002 - The 1/18 meet marked the return to competition
for Baldwin School's Julia Pudlin, who competed on the second
leg of the 4x800. Pudlin had been out of action since she
fractured her heel at the Loucks Games last May 11. Pudlin
ran comfortably in a time of 2:28 and passed several competitors,
helping Baldwin achieve a school record (10:46.4) as it was
the first relay of any kind run by Baldwin in the short history
of its track program.
January 19, 2002 - In the January issue of T&F News (www.trackandfieldnews.com),

January 19, 2002 - In the first two weeks of the new year,
the PA track community, and more importantly, the community
as a whole, lost two of its most promising children

January 15, 2002 - Half miler Gordon Hall of Warwick announces
his choice is Cornell, while Central Dauphin's Sara Shoaf
heads to Penn State.

September 12, 2001 - Good news for PA Cross Country. Baldwin
School senior Julia Pudlin resumed the running aspect of her
training Monday. She had been limited to swimming after an
injury ended her spring season in Mid-May. It is uncertain
when she will return to competition, but has pulled out of
the Great American race in North Carolina scheduled for Sept.
21-22.
