Sunday, February 16 - Philadelphia Catholic League Championships (boys+girls) @ Lehigh University (I stayed home when the snow started in Havertown @ 7am) - The storm arrived much earlier than predicted (by about 6-7 hours) in the Philadelphia area, but by that time, most of the athletes and coaches were well on their way to Lehigh University. The snow held off in southern Lehigh County where the meet was held, but meantime back in Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester counties, it was near whiteout conditions by noon. Those conditions led PCL officials to postpone the meet. In events completed, Nicole Leach, West Catholic, was off to a great start, taking the 60 in 7.84 and the 400 in 56.95. She also helped her 800 meter relay team get 2nd in 1:45.05 to Archbishop Ryan's 1:44.12. Teammate Latavia Thomas was 2nd in the 400 in 57.89. Ryan's Denise Tetkowski took the Long Jump with a leap of 17-10.50, and had the 4th fastest time in the 60 Hurdles trials, which were suspended. In addition to the events mentioned, only the Mile, DMR, High Jump and Pole Vault were completed. The Shot Put finals were set to begin when the meet ended. In the boys' competition, O'Hara's Bob McDade captured the Shot Put with a throw of 52-09.75. Juan Cave, St. Joseph's Prep, cleared 6-04 in the High Jump. Saturday, February 15 - PTFCA Track Carnival @ Lehigh University (PennTrack on site) - In the biggest PA meet of the season, 167 teams (178 had sent applications but didn't show because of snow) with over 1500 athletes descended on Lehigh University for a smoothly run nearly eight-hour meet with 29 Dyestat Elite performances. The most impressive athlete of the indoor season continues to be Springfield (Montco) senior Mark Korich, who won the mile in 4:22.27, the 800 in 1:56.07 and came from way behind in the 4x800 to bring his team into sixth place. Three other guys followed Korish under 1:59, including Great Valley's Ben Franzuski (1:58.61), Sun Valley's Chris Kessler, 1:58.84), and Northwest's Josh Fritz (1:58.98). For the girls, Nicole Erby of Cumberland Valley went 2:19.64. Debbie Huss, Wyomissing, took the mile in 5:10.80, chased by Gwynedd Mercy's Meghan Bishop 5:11.77) and Lewisburg's Ashleigh Wetzel (5:13.11). In the 3000, defending indoor state champ Ryan Blood, East Pennsboro, went 8:57.09 in his second race of the season, the fastest 3000 in PA this season. The girls' 3000 was quick, with Ephrata's Betsy Sensenig controlling the race to win in 10:26.7. Upper Dublin's Lauren Bowles was 2nd in 10:28.7; Amy Huss, 3rd in 10:31.9, and Bensalem's Ashley Kelly, 4th in 10:37.7. Meet records were set by Chioma Nwaneshivdu of Penn Wood (7.68 in the 60 dash); and Lindsey Regan of Easton in the Pole Vault (11-06). Lauren Birckhead of Liberty, was 2nd with the same height buy more misses, while Pennsbury's Kourtney Marquis was 3rd, clearing 11-00. In the 60 Hurdles, Schuylkill Valley's Heather Patch, won in 9.25. In the Long Jump, Al Gregory, Pennsbury, went over 23-03, along with a victory in the 60 dash, going 7.06. Neshaminy's Brian Kennelly was 2nd in the LJ (22-02). Sara Kirsh, Pennsbury, took the girls' LJ (17-07), while Wissahickon's Alex Baptiste was 2nd, going 17-06. Abington's Cowin Mills went 49.80 in the 400, while Wissahickon sophomore Krista Simkins went 57.70 to win the girls two-lapper. In the Shot Put, Upper Merion's Steve Tyson won with a toss of 54-00. Blake Taylor, Methacton, continued to High Jump well, clearing 6-08. Harrisburg's Andre Hicks was 2nd, clearing 6-06. Downingtown's Kelly Kajunski cleared 5-05. In the relays, the Upper Darby girls powered to a 1:46.82 4x200 win. And North Penn took all three contested relays, winning the 4x200 in 1:33.20, the 4x400 in 3:30.58, and the 4x800 in 8:15.55. Monday, February 10 - PA Performances @ Varsity High School Classic @ The Armory, NYC - During the 2002 Indoor, 2002 Outdoor, and the 2003 Indoor seasons, only Schuylkill Valley's Dane Miller has thrown the Shot Put farther than Glen Mills' Tyree Suber in Pennsylvania. Suber went over 60 feet on January 30th at the Glen Mills Invitational, and then topped it with a US#2 tie effort of 61-00.50 in NYC. Teammate Terrence Askin was 3rd in the 55 Dash with a 6.4. And Sun Valley's Chris Kessler was 5th in the 1600 in 4:33.3.

For those who were wondering, he was 17th in XC AA, getting 17th - which gives him one of the best ranges in recent PA history.

Saturday, February 8 - TFCAPG D2 Meet #9 @ Lehigh University - Springfield (Montco) senior Mark Korich posts US#2* 1:54.3 800 - which goes nicely with his PA#2 4:25.3 Mile and PA#3 8:59.0 3000. Oh, and he was 17th in AA Cross Country, which gives him one of the best ranges in recent PA history. Holy Ghost Prep posted a strong 8:16.8 4x800, while Wissahickon went 1:35.4 in the 4x200. Octorara's Ryan Fritz cleared 6-04 in the High Jump. *He held #1 briefly, but Ken Sinkovitz, Bergen Catholic, went 1:53.4 @ the NY Armory in the Metropolitan Invitational. Saturday, February 8 - TFCAGP D1 Meet #9 @ Lehigh University - Norristown's Mike Whitehead leapt into the top spot in the PA rankings, becoming the first of the season over 46 feet with his 46-05.75 effort. Although not quite Mark Korich's morning sprint, Adam Breisch, Quakertown (1:58.5) and Bernie Rendler, Cardinal O'Hara (1:58.8) provided a glimpse of the State final that should produce a very fast time on PSU's banked track. The 4x800 was won by LaSalle in 8:14.6, with Hatboro-Horsham a close 2nd in 8.18.1. Abington (3.30.4) and North Penn (3.31.9) had a close 4x400. Saturday, February 8 - Gill Athletics Kutztown Open @ Kutztown University - Frances Koons, Allentown Central Catholic, tried for the distance triple and came up with two first and a second. She took the 800 in 2:27.56 and the 1600 in 5:21.37, but fell 19 seconds shy of catching Emily Kruger of Lampeter Strasburg in the 3000, going 10:46.25 to Kruger's 10:27.76. Kourtney Marquis, Pennsbury, cleared 11-00 in the Pole Vault to become the fourth PA girl over that height this season. New Jersey's Sylvia Galarza, Millville, won the Shot Put with a toss of 40-10. Central Dauphin's Jamal James took over the top spot in the Long Jump with a leap of 22-08.75. In the High Jump, Reading's Frankie Graham cleared 6-04. The Shot Put for the guys was strong again, as Central Dauphin's Ryan Whiting went 58-04.50 to hold off Wyomissing's Jon Hart (52-09). Saturday, February 8 - PA @ Colgate Womens' Games Finals @ Madison Square Garden - BASED ON PARTIAL RESULTS | Tiffany Abney, Merion Mercy, missed the first Colgate 400 because of traffic. She steered clear of trouble the rest of the series and won every 400 along the way, capping it with a championship at Madison Square Garden. She won in a faster time in 2002. PA's other champion was LaVaughn Jones, WCCS in Philadelphia, who took first in the Middle School 1500 in 4:50.09. In other other school finals, Abney's Merion Mercy teammate Kimarra McDonald was 2nd in the 800 in 2:18.45. Hershey's Angie Saterstad (right, with her trophy @ Madison Square Garden) was 2nd in the 1500 in 4:46.80. Runner-ups in the Middle School finals included Ashley Ligon, St. Cyprion, Yeadon in the 400 in 61.73; Kameesha Worthington, Tilden Middle School, in the 800 inn 2:20.09; and Saqenda Dallas, Imani Charter, Philadelphia, in the MS 200 in 26.80. Friday, February 7 - DVGTCA Meet #9 @ Kutztown University - The 4x800 at States is going to be one of the best yet, as everybody seems to be putting together a fast foursome. The best in the state in both the DMR and the 3200 Relay is Hatboro-Horsham, led by senior Janine Ricci. Their 9:34.5 is also a new US#3. 2nd in Friday's race was Cardinal OHara, at 9:36.7 (new US#5), followed by St. Hubert's in 9:46.4 and Archbishop Prendergast in 9:48.2, both top 20 US times. A great preview of the PCL portion of the state race will occur next Sunday at Haverford College in the PCL Champs. (Note: PA also has the US#5 in Haverford with their 9:37.6). Hatboro-Horsham's 800 specialist Caitlin Klass went 2:17.6 for a 2.1 second win over Pennsbury's Rebecca Powell. William Penn's 4x200 took the win by ten seconds over Chester in 1:47.2. Friday February 7 - PA @ West Virginia Flyers All-Comers Meet @ West Virginia University - Diane Gmiter, Laurel Highlands, took over the top spot in the Shot Put with a throw of 40-09.50. Chartiers Valley's Dana Ventrone moved up the PA standings in the Long Jump with her 18-03 effort. Sha-Tira Snell, Penn Hills, took the extra five meters afforded by the WVU track and posted a 9.0 win for 60 meters. Bethel Park's Danielle Malay was 3rd in the same time. In the High Jump, North Allegheny's Shannon Yon and McDowell's Nicole Smith both cleared 5-04, with Yon getting the win on fewer misses. Thursday, February 6 - TSTCA Meet #6 @ University of Pittsburgh - The Penn Hills' girls posted a strong 1:48.5 in the 4x220 yards relay. Erica Moody, Oakland Catholic, won the 440y in 59.6; Butler's Krystal Epps wins the 880y in 2:22.3; and Mount Lebanon's Lauren Wood gets a confidence booster in the 3000m with her 11:36.1. Saturday, February 1 - Susquehanna University HS Classic @ Susquehanna University - Josh Smith, Selinsgrove, joined the 44-plus club in the Triple Jump, going 1/2 behind that for the win. Chambersburg Kylee Schuler posted a strong 11:19.79 3200. Lewisburg's Ashleigh Wetzel won the girls' 1600 in 5:21.87. In the boys distance races, Cedar Cliff senior Pat Philbin went 9:41.0 in the 3200, and State AA XC champ Chris Spooner, Lewisburg, took the 1600 in 4;30.62. Saturday, February 1 - TSTCA Meet #5 @ Robert Morris College - North Hills' sprinter Andrew Johnson knocked off another tenth as he took the 55 Dash in 6.2 seconds and now shares the top spot in PA with Kenny Covington of Lancaster McCaskey. In the 55 Hurdles, Hickory's E.J. McLaurin easily took first in 7.5. Mt. Lebanon's 4x400 and 4x800 squads were victorious, going 3:46.9 and 8:27.3, respectively. In girls' competition, Julianna Reed, Hampton, held off Sha-Tira Snell of Penn Hills by .1, going 8.3. North Allegheny's Shannon Yon cleared 5-5 in the High Jump, the best in PA this season. Double winners included Carletta Nance, Penn Hills, going 7.2 in the 55, and 27.1 in the 200; plus Upper St. Clair's Julie Cameron, taking the 800 in 2:23.6 and the 1600 in 5:22.9. Friday, January 31- DVGTCA Meet #8 @ Lehigh University - Improving performances on the track and in the field events, including a new US#3 and #4 DMR as the Hatboro-Horsham squad of Nicole Murphy, Megan Rae, Caitlin Klass and Janine Ricci went 12:23.9 to beat St. Hubert's by less than three seconds (12:26.7). In the 400, William Penn's Juanita Broaddus cruises to a 57.4. At 800 meters, West Catholic's Latavia Thomas wins in 2;16.9. And in a strong Mile, Perkiomen Valley's Sarah Roberts holds off Prendie's Nicole O'Dea and O'Hara's Danielle Schopf to win in 5:16.8. Friday, January 31 - F&M Meet #2 @ Franklin & Marshall College -
Juniors Kate Papenberg, Red Lion, and Frances Koons, Allentown Central Catholic, battled in both individual distance races. Papenberg captured the 3200 by two seconds over Koons, going 11:24. In the 1600, both were timed in 5:22, with Papenberg again getting the edge. However, Cedar Cliff soph Janelle Young was timed in 5:18 for the win in the 1600. Lewistown's Emily Lexley was a double winner, taking the 55 Hurdles in 8.4 and the 200 in 27.4. In boys competition, Oley's Zach Fogel cleared 6-04 in the High Jump. And the 4x200 provided a tight finish, with Harrisburg going 1:36.5 to nip 2nd place York by .2 and 3rd place Dallastown by 1.3 seconds. Drew Eckman, Oxford, went 50.2 in the 400 for the victory. Friday, January 31 - Slippery Rock Meet #2 @ Slippery Rock University - The Christiansens invaded the confines of Slippery Rock's indoor track, and each came away with a win and a second place finish. Jesi easily captured the Two-Mile Run with her 11:23.2, but took 2nd in the 800 in 2:25.6 to a Magnificant HS (OH) runner who finished in 2:23.3. Jed took his Two-Mile, going 9:48.5, but was runner-up in the 800 in 2:08.1 to Maplewood's J. Palmer, who went 2:05.7. Valley's MyCah Clemons went 18-02.50 in the Long Jump, the 2nd best in PA this season. Clemons also won the 55 Hurdles, going 8.49 in the Prelims (tops in PA) and 8.59 in the Finals. Friday, January 31-Saturday, February 1 - PA @ Virginia Tech High School Invitational @ Virginia Tech University - Hickory junior Andrew Rademacher sets another PR this season, clearing 15-09 for the win and a current US#5.

Thursday, January 30 - Glen Mills Invitational #2 @ Glen Mills Schools - Tyree Suber is progressing as the season ages, and with the home track boost, he cleared 60 feet in the Shot Put, going 60-06.75. Bob McDade of Cardinal O'Hara was 2nd with a throw of 52-11. In the triple Jump, Great Valley's Galen Rivers leapt 44-05.75 for first, while the Cardinal O'Hara 4x800 took first in 8:14.83.
