Many Philadelphia Catholic League meet results are on the PCL site. Prendie's Pilar Batts has been particulary impressive, conquering the 100-200-400-800 when needed.

Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Erie McDowell Invitational @ McDowell High School - Surprise! Sheena Gordon wins four events. And all four were among the best in the country. Her biggest improvement on the season at this meet came in the Long Jump, when she went 18-11. She passed 40', going 41-01 in the Triple Jump. Her High Jump didn't beat her season best, but 5-09 will win a lot of meets. And of course with that leaping ability, running the 100 Hurdles in 14.54 comes quite naturally. Jessica Perry of Peters Township hit a nice race, taking the 3200 in 10:53.50, and taking the 1600 in a fast 5:05.10. Dan Mazzocco didn't win four, but his 1600-3200 double was equally impressive as Gordon's performance. His 9:15.67 and 4:17.57 show him to be rounding into shape, and gaining strength. Andy Weilacher of Eisenhower continued his comeback, finiishing 7th in 9:49.1. Mount Lebanon may be one of the few teams to push North Penn at States. Their 7:57.54 came without challenge. And Shawn Culligan of Bradford captured the 110 Hurdles in 14.65, and the 300 Hurdles in 39.17. Results.

Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Springfield (Delco) Invitational @ Springfield High School - On a glorious (but dehydrating) kind of day, hundreds of southeastern PA athletes converged on Springfield, Delaware County and launched some strong performances. West Chester Henderson's Danielle Horgan moved up the 800 charts, going 2:21.4 to capture the 800. Running on her home track, Ann Marie Regan went 5;21.8 for 1600. Proving that you can win from any heat, the Springfield (Delco) girls took the 4x100 in 52.4, to win by .1 over the top team in the final heat, O.J. Roberts. Three girls' teams broke 10:00 in the 4x800, West Chester Henderson (pictured)- (9:47.3), West Chester East (9:53.7), and Unionville (9:58.5). Kelly Looby of Ridley was a double champ, taking the Long Jump (16-04.50) and the Triple Jump (32-06.00). Heather Allen of Haverford was just slightly below her Penn Relays Shot Put, going 34-00.50. Lauren Luci of the host team, won the Discus with a toss of 100-11.00, while Methacton's Kristen Brandon took the Javelin with a throw of 101-09.00. For the boys, Sun Valley's Chris Kessler ran a strong 1:59.2 to win the 800. Eric Fleming of Bishop Shanahan took both the 1600 and 3200 races in state-ranking times of 4:22.2 and 9:31.1. Their boys squad also took the 4x800 in 8:20.2. Methacton's Blake Taylor won both the High Jump (5-11), and the Triple Jump (44-06.75). Results courtesy of Dan Curran. Includes Photo Page.

Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 2nd Annual Hurricane Classic @ Villa Maria Academy - There was a coming out party at Villa Maria today. Two years ago, a freshman named Abney burst onto the PA high school scene and upset the balance of power in the sprints. This year, there's a new freshman who came within a tenth of a second of upsetting Kennett star Jakki Bailey in the 200. In the process, she reached her season goal of running in the 24's. Krista Simkins, (left) who came through the AAU club process, went 24.8 in the prelims, and then 24.3 (Wissahickon school record) in the finals, as Bailey won in 24.2, a new meet and track record. "My starts are terrible. When I get that going, I'll be OK." Simkins has set a new goal of "getting in the 23's." She is just one of many talented athletes on Wissahickon this spring. "This is my best team since the early 80's" says Wissahickon coach Mike Walker. And it showed again today, as his squad had seven top three finishes in the individual running events, swept the relays, and took top honors in four of the seven field events. Bailey also took the 100, winning comfortably in 11.9. The distance stars had a good day, getting some nice doubles. Kim Malcolm of the host Hurricanes, won the 1600 in a top PA season time of 5:06.1, then came back to win the 800 in 2:20.6. Kelly O'Connell, Coatesville, was 2nd in the 1600 at 5:09.4, while Wissahickon's Erin Franklin was 3rd in 5:10.5, less than an hour after setting a three-second PR for the 800 with a split of 2:24.7 in the 4x800, with her team winning with their 9:43.7. West Chester East was 2nd with a 9:55.7. Wissahickon also took the 4x100 (49.4) and the 4x400 (4:04.0). Wissahickon Jump specialist Alex Baptiste won the Triple Jump with her 36-00.50, and the Long Jump with a leap of 16-05.75. Results courtesy of Villa Maria. Photo Page.

Saturday, April 13, 2002 - Susquehanna University High School Classic @ Susquehanna University - Susquehanna University is hosting the upper valleys of PA, and attracting some of the best talent in the state. Lewisburg's Ashleigh Wetzel did a strong distance double, taking the 1600 in 5:07.67, and the 3200 in 11.36.85. The 1600 time is PA#2. In the boys competiton, Tyler Fedeli followed up his state leading 6-8 High Jump from the week before, with a 6-6 effort. In the sprints, Thad Mitchell of Altoona took both short sprints from Steve Huffman of Montoursville, winning the 100 by .07 in 11.20, and the 200 by .55 in 22.62. Montoursville's Eric Baker got better as the distance went up, finishing 10th in the 100, 3rd in the 200, and winning the 400 in 50.59. In the Hurdles, Jeff Kiss, Windber, and Brian Johnston, Altoona, traded first and second, with Kiss winning the 110 in 14.81 and Johnston the 300 in 39.60. Altoona took all three relays, 43.60, 3:26.34, and 8:19.27. Rob Kerris of Southern Columbia won the Shot Put with a toss of 48-03 and the Discus, going 149-11. Saturday, April 13, 2002 - Delaware County Girls' Relays @ Interboro - Haverford HS showed they are well on the road back this season after their second place state finish in 2001 with three freshmen and a sophomore. They're a year older, and apparently, with a senior joining the group, more determined. At the Delco Girls' Relays at Interboro, Fiona York, Rachel Giannascoli, Alicia York and Gen Story (the SR), went 9:32.3. O'Hara and Upper Darby were more then 20 seconds back. But O'Hara (Debevec, Annunziato, Kelly, Schopf) were setting up for the DMR, taking the 1200-400-800-1600 relay in 12:36.0. Prendie was three seconds back. Partial Results in PDF.

Gwynedd-Mercy also took the DII 4x100, 4x200 and open Shuttle Hurdles Relay. Jessica Cickay, Council Rock, also had a big day. She started the nice triple with a 5:03.9 leadoff split in 4x1,600 (21:53.3); followed by a 2:20.9 4x800 split and a 5:15 1,600 split in the DMR. Saturday, April 6, 2002 - Plymouth-Whitemarsh Colonial Relays @ Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS - Windy and cold weather pretty much limited the chances that performances would be what the athletes and coaches were shooting for. The Discus and Javelin were into the wind. The wind was behind the high jumpers, throwing off their steps and timing. But it was still a meet that kept moving at a good clip. In the Girls Relays, the top prizes were split rather evenly, as William Penn (Juanita Broaddus photo by PennTrackXC) and host Plymouth-Whitemarsh took home three golds apiece. Souderson, Methacton and Gwynedd-Mercy took two golds each. For the Boys Relays, any event that involved an 800 went to Bishop McDevitt, as they the 4x400 and Pole Vault relays to tally five wins. Lower Merion tallied three golds, while Lower Moreland had two golds. Results and Photo Page.

Saturday, April 6, 2002 - Council Rock Invitational @ Council Rock HS - (boys only meet) For those who wanted individual events mixed with their relays, the other windy and cold spot was eastern Bucks County at Council Rock. The unusual format featured a 1500, 3000 and 5000. But it was the shorter distances where close races abounded. Behind wins in the 400, 110 Hurdles, Sprint Medley, High Jump and Discus, William Tennent captured the team title with 109 points. Individually, the 400 was the closest race of the day as Troy Roberson, Tennent, and Abington's Lester Caesar were both clocked in hand-times of 48.2, with Roberson getting the edge. Only .1 in the 100, .2 in the 200 and .6 in the 800 separated the top two finishers. In the Relays, Abington took both the 4x400 (3:23.1) and 4x800 (8:20.8). Results courtesy of Bill Kenny.

Saturday, March 30, 2002 - PTFCA Classic @ Coatesville High School - It wasn't raining or snowing like last year. But it was certainly windy. And if you've ever been to a meet at the site of the District 1 Championships at Coatesville High School in Chester County, you know the wind whips off the ridge, right into the faces of every finisher. Given the conditions, there were some promising performances at a meet which attracts talent from a much wider area than the Southeastern PA region. Considering the stiff breeze, all the distance races were strong. Baldwin School's Julia Pudlin, rounding into shape after missing XC and much of Indoor from a May 2001 injury, went through the mile in 5:21 in the 3200, taking control at that point on a strong field that included Wissahickon's Erin Franklin, and Coatesville's Kelly O'Connell. Pudlin went 10:59.01 for the win. Franklin was 2nd in 11:08.22, and O'Connell 3rd in 11:28.31. Pudlin plans to race in CA at the Arcadia meet in two weeks. For the boys, Joel Thomas of Emmaus, from District 11, ran a strong 9:32.14 to hold off Upper Moreland's Mark Mullelly (9:37.28) and Damony Giles of Simon Gratz (9:37.88). In the Mile, Tim Erickson of Southern Lehigh went 4:21.83 for a 1.5 second edge on Strath Haven's Andrew Combs. Lewisburg's Ashleigh Wetzel won the Mile in 5:10.16, as Hatboro's Janine Ricci was just under three seconds back, and Gwynedd Mercy's Meghan Bishop was less than two seconds behind Ricci. Takia Brooks (pictured) of Abington won the short sprints, taking the 100 in 12:49 by just .03 over West Catholic's Tiffany Bradley; and the 200 in 25.16 by the same slim margin over, you guessed it, Tiffany Bradely. (Something tells me this battle is just beginning). Perry County's Jessica Kratzer of Greenwood, took three events, including the Shot Put (36-6*), the Discus (118-04), and the Javelin (129-07). Denise Tetkowski of Archbishop Ryan, also was a triple victor, taking the 300 Hurdles in 47.35, the Long Jump with her 17-02* effort, and the Triple Jump with a leap of 36-09*. In the Relays, Simon Gratz boys and girls took the 4x100's, the guys in 43.08, and the girls in 48.60. William Tennent's boys won the 4x800 in 8:00.31, while the Haverford girls picked up where they left off last season, taking the girls' race in 9:46.89. The Council Rock boys won the DMR in 10:40.35. Complete results courtesy of PTFCA. Photo Page.

Saturday, March 23, 2002 - "Pop" Emrey Warm-Up Relays @ Liberty HS - It was cold, with winds howling up the 30 mph. But for the athletes, it was their first chance to compete. So the wind and cold were cast aside, and the events unfolded. In the girls' relays, Liberty took three of the eight running events contended, winning the DMR, the Mid. DMR, and the 4x800. In the field relays, Saucon Valley and Liberty each took two. On the boys' side, Northampton, Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic each took two of the eight running relays, while Stroudsburg captured two of the field relays. Results (as PDFs) courtesy of Bill Ruth.

Saturday, March 23, 2002 - Chichester Relays @ Chichester High School - It was sunny, but windy. Not the ideal spring weather we had experienced much of this winter. But it was the first official meet of the outdoor season, and both girls' and boys' Great Valley and the Strath Haven teams showed good depth. The Strath Haven girls took the Division II team competition with Great Valley 2nd. The Strath Haven guys won the Division I boys, downing a strong Cardinal O'Hara squad. Ridley girls were tops in DI, while the Chichester boys defended their home turf. Highlights with PDFs of results.

Original Story 2/23/02

Thanks to some volunteer help, PennTrack XC will soon introduce a new section called "Duals" in which we'll bring you reports of those sometimes significant league contests that occur between the invitationals. Submit local reports, highlights or links to PA DUALS

1999 Coatesville grad Katie Nowak finished 15th at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in the 5000 3/29, running a 16:34.24 NCAA DI Provisional Qualifying Time. The Ball State soph was 3rd at the 1998 PA AAA Girls' State Championships in 18:15.99 at Penn State, just nine seconds behind champ Liz Churchville of Upper Merion.

March 31, 2002 - Six indoor state records set and one tied during the 2002 Indoor Season. After Karina Francis, William Penn, broke the seven-year old 60 dash record of 7.50 that was held by Joyce Bates of Simon Gratz with a 7.46, along came Jakki Bailey of Kennett, going 7.44 at the Nike Indoor Classic. William Penn's Juanita Broaddus took .03 off the 24.05 200 record of Jennifer Wilson of William Penn, who set the mark in 1992. Sheena Gordon, McDowell, topped her Triple Jump Record by 1.5", going 41-06; and she tied the 6-0 High Jump record of Central Dauphin East's Hyleas Fountain, which had been set in 1999. The new boys' records were all in the relays, and two belonged to Glen Mills. They went 1:28.49 in the 800 meter relay, and 3:18.73 in the 1600 meter race. North Penn set the new standard in the 3200 meter relay, going 7:52.05. See the PA Indoor and Outdoor State Records page for boys and girls.

March 25, 2002 -Rob Robertson commits to the University of North Carolina.

February 3, 2002 - Great Valley HS (Malvern) adds a meet the same day as the Judge Relays. The meet is designed to introduce the region to their spectacular new outdoor T&F facility. The meet will be held 4/20 - the Saturday before Penn Relays. So a tough choice, but now there are two quality local meets. (For a closer look and contact info, click the photo.)

HERE COME THE ARCHIVES!

PennTrackXC is a volunteer website run for the benefit of the high school athletes of PA. Because we do not receive any funding assistance, we only have limited time to dedicate to this site. In order to 'catch up' with a backlog of results, stories and photos we have accumulated from prior seasons, we will be focusing much of our energy during Indoor 2002 on that task. What this means is that we will continue to provide basic coverage of PA results, such as those below, plus limited in-person coverage of select meets. Thanks for your continued support. See you around the track.

- Don Rich, Publisher

After 72 hours off the 'net, it appears that PennTrackXC may soon have the sponsorship support it needs to ensure its survival.

Just as Dyestat faced a similar dilemma over a year ago, PennTrackXC could not continue with its statewide, detailed coverage without gaining sponsorship of some programming and other expenses.

Because we are philosophically opposed to ever charging athletes and coaches for any service, we were forced to assess our financial structure. With new support, we hope to add enhancements and improvements to make PennTrackXC even more useful to its core audience - the high school athletes.

So the bottom line is - looks like we're back for good.

Thanks for all the emails and calls of support.
