APRIL WEEK 4 MEET SUMMARIES

April 26- Saturday @ The Penn Relays - Attrition was the name of the game as the fourth Pennsylvania American champ was crowned when Hickory's Andrew Rademacher cleared 15-01.25 in the Pole Vault on a damp, cool morning. In other Championship of America competition, Norristown's Michael Whitehead was 3rd in the Triple Jump with his 47-07.75 effort. In the boys' 4x800 COA, Cumberland Valley was the top PA team with a time of 7;59.03. In the Tri-State 4x100, William Penn won in 46.40, while North Penn won the Philly-area 4x400 in 3:17.49.

April 25 - Friday @ The Penn Relays - On his very first throw of the preliminaries, Brad Zimmerman had everyone else in the competition start competing for 2nd. His 215-03 stood the test of two flights and the finals. Cedar Crest's Thomas Jordan was 2nd as the only other guy over 200', going 209-07. Tyree Suber of Glen Mills got back into explode mode holding off the challenge of the #1 seeded Jamaican to go 62-02.50 for the win (and the watch). North Hills' Ian Fitzgerald, a junior, showed patience in his first-ever 3000, resisting the temptation to go after the leader before unleashing a drive that would bring him into 2nd, just two seconds behind the repeat Champ Brian Dalpiez in 8:30.16. Cardinal O'Hara DMR anchor Steve Hallinan refused to give up, methodically working his way back to the leaders before paying the price over the final two laps. His effort brought his team a 3rd place finish in 10:21.14. Methacton's Blake Taylor cleared 6-08.25 to get 2nd in the High Jump. Carson Pickens, Germantown Friends Academy, and Juan Cave, St. Joseph's Prep, each cleared 6-06.25 and tied for 5th. The best 6th and 9th place finishes of the meet for PA probably have to be Gwynedd-Mercy and Haverford in the Championship of America 4x800. Each Gwynedd-Mercy girls set a PR (Kelley McGrath 2:17.8, Kate Vernan 2:15.7, Kahki Mealey 2:16.1, Meghan Bishop 2:14.9) enroute to a 9:04.03. Haverford got solid runs from everyone, including two PRs to get 9th in 9:13.90. William Penn ran into the Long Beach Poly juggernaut in both COA races, getting 5th in the 4x100 in 46.27 and 6th in the 4x400 in 3:50.21. In the Mile, Lewisburg's Chris Spooner, Quakertown's Adam Breisch and Springfield (Montco)'s Mark Korich went 6-7-8. And North Penn, Cumberland Valley and Lewisburg all advanced to the COA 4x800.

April 24 - Thursday @ The Penn Relays - A remarkable first day for Pennsylvania girls, as three Philly-area hurdlers went 2-3-4 in the 400 version of the event. Nicole Leach, the West Catholic phenom who broke 60-seconds for the first time just two weeks ago, ran a 59.00 to become the first American across the line. Merion Mercy senior Tiffany Abney was 3rd in 59.18 and William Penn senior Christina Smith was 4th in 59.89. Hershey senior Angie Saterstad set about a 20-second PR by gaining 3rd in a very fast 3000, going 9:49.91. PA cleaned up the 5-6-7 spots with senior Emily Kruger, Lampeter-Strasburg, and juniors Kylee Schuyler, Chambersburg, and Francis Koons, Allentown Central Catholic. Four PA teams advanced to the COA 4x800's, including Gwynedd-Mercy (9:20.48) and Wyomissing (9:30.60) in the Small Schools, and Haverford Township (9;22.14) and Hatboro-Horsham (9:23.55) in the Large Schools. In Field Events, Williamsport's Ruby Radocaj was 2nd in the Javelin with a 147-08 effort, while Easton Pole Vaulter Courtney Regan was 3rd with an 11-03.75. The fastest 800 split of the day was delivered by Hatboro-Horsham sophomore Caitlin Klaas iln 2:13.8. And William Penn qualified for BOTH the 4x100 and 4x400 Championship of America races, taking their heat of the 4x100 in 46.88 and the 4x400 in 3:47.21. West Catholic ran 3:48.32 to make the COA.

Tuesday, April 22 - Memories of Penn, by Walt Murphy

Hickory Pole Vaulter Andrew Rademacher
reached 14'0 as a freshman, 15'0 as a sophomore, and is approaching his junior goal of 16'0. His 2003 Indoor PR of 15' 9 gained him recognition in the Spring T&F News high school preview issue. He'll compete at the Nike Indoor Classic next weekend. Meet this PA elite in a PennTrackXC feature.

March 25, 2003 - While in New York, I got to meet Christopher Malcolm, Reggie Witherspoon's (right) indoor coach. With PA's legendary William Reed of Central High as the holder of the record Witherspoon broke in the 400 at NSIC, it was only natural for me to cover the story as discussion centered on which record to count. Reggie's was run from a three-lane stagger, while Reed's was run from a two-lane stagger. It also gave me the opportunity to interview Arnie Shiffrin, Reed's high school coach. The story was published March 25th on Dyestat, along with some of the discussion in the T&F community, and a response from Reggie Witherspoon.

Also while in New York, Matt "Jersey Guy" Soja and I talked with record-setting Pentathlete Donovan Kilmartin (left) and his coach at Team Idaho. The story was also published on Dyestat.

"The leaders were right in front of me, and I realized I could run with them, and qualify." - Jon Pastore - The story

"I have what it takes to compete here." - Ian Gottesfeld after his first Foot Locker finals in San Diego, 12/14. The story.

November 3, 2002 - Philadelphia Inquirer XC writer Ira Josephs contributes a great piece on our sport in the November 3rd Sunday Inquirer -
"For runners, the hills of Belmont are hallowed ground."

September 11, 2002
- The Millers of Manheim. A pair of prodigies.

For his Masters' competitors,
the suspence is over.
Steve's 40 and he's ready to race.

1991 World Championships Marathon Bronze Medalist & 1992 Olympian Marathoner (and native Pennsylvanian)
Steve Spence had a birthday May 9th. He's now racing with the Masters, and Steve plans to be as competitive as he can be. The story and a bit of PA running history is this special feature on one of America's all-time best distance runners.

Who won the boys' PA 800 in 1951? It was a Lowthert. A family you can get to know from PA T&F history, in Features.
