How did AA stack up against
AAA at States? Well, head-to-head it was 7 to 29,
AA vs. AAA. But look behind the stats, and many of
the performances were close enough to make a T&F
fan wish for a Meet of Champs like our neighbors get
in NJ. What are your thoughts on this comparison
and a MOC?

Tuesday-Wednesday, May 21-22, 2002 -
Public League Championships @ Edison HS -
It's called a team title because it takes
more than one individual to score enough points to win. And
William Penn has quite a few individuals who could almost
win a meet on their own. All Juanita Broaddus did was
win the 100 (11.94), the 200 (23.87), the 400 (55.08) and
get 2nd in the Long Jump (17-00). All Christina Smith
did was win the 100 Hurdles (14.61), the 400 Hurdles (1:00.04),the
High Jump (5-02) and get 3rd in the 200 (25.00). And all Madonna
Patterson did was win the 1600 (5:22.25), get 2nd in
the 100 Hurdles (15.8), get 2nd to teammate Tyeshia Thomas
(2:17.43) in the 800 (2:19.50), and anchor the 4x800 to a
win in 9:54.99. And on top of the 800 win, Thomas got 2nd
in the 400 Hurdles (1:03.14), and ran on the winning 4x400
(3:56.17). And there's Shantia Byrd, Lynda Whitfield,
and Kandis Worthington (24.67 in the 200) to thank
for those 202 points, too. Let's just call them William Penn,
Public League Champions. Other elite performances included
Tyneshia Gardner, Girls High, 56.09 in the 400. For
the boys, John Fudge, Simon Gratz, took the 110 Hurdle
(14.43), the Long Jump (21-10), and the Triple Jump (44-08.50).
Dewayne Dawkins, Overbrook, took the 400 Hurdles in
56.12 and the 200 in 22.50. Central captured the boys' title.

Sunday, May 19, 2002 - Philadelphia Catholic League Championships
@ Widener University - Cardinal O'Hara came up just three
points shy of pulling off a clearn sweep of the PCL team championships
from XC to indoor and outdoor. The boys and girls both captured
the PCL XC and Indoor champs, and the boys clearly won the
outdoor title. But it was Archbishop Ryan's depth that refused
to lose as O'Hara finished 3rd in the 4x400, but needed 1st
to win the title. Individually, Archbishop Carroll's Maurice
Stovall ran one of the fastest 400's in the state this
season, in a one-on-one duel with McDevitt's Tariq Boston
48.08-48.85. Dougherty's James Jefferson captured both
the 100 (11.03-Boston:11.13) and 200 (21.99). O'Hara's Craig
Haywood won the High Jump, clearing 6-02 and the Long
Jump, leaping 20-06.50. Nicole Leach, West Catholic
(56.61 400/62.19 400H); Karon Lugay, O'Hara (12.23
100/25.00 200); an Denise Tetkowski, Ryan 17-02.00

Friday-Saturday, May 17-18 - District 3 @ Shippensburg University
- Friday: Angie
Saterstad, the Hershey junior, shook off the effects
of a rough spring to win her third straight District 3 3200
championship, going 10:56.22. She'll face much the same competition
in 2003, as 2nd-4th place went to two sophomores and a junior.

also meeting the qualifying time. At 9th was a freshman we'll
probably hear about a lot, Janelle Young of Cedar Cliff.

indoor 300 champ Ryan Blood took the AA 3200 title in
9:41.90, but the top 7 in AAA were faster, led by Cedar Crest's

Friday-Saturday, May 10-11, 2002 - District 8 (Pittsburgh
City League) - The City League (PIAA District 8) Championships
were fielded Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at Oliver High
School in Pittsburgh. Although the Schenley boys led 91-33
after the field events on Friday, Allderdice charged back
in the running events on Saturday, edging Schenley 160-154.
Allderdice swept both the 800 and the 1600 runs and took two
of the top three spots in both the 300 intermediate hurdles
and the 3200 run to complete the comeback. The Schenley girls,
however, held off a similar charge by the Allderdice girls
to hang on for a 165-159 win. In the process, Schenley won
both the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays. Yvonne Ferguson
of Westinghouse was a triple winner, running away with the
100 (12.5), 200 (25.05), and 400 (55.95) meter dashes, qualifying
for the PIAA championships in the 200 and 400 and breaking
a twenty-year old City record in the 400. Carmen Bruce
of Schenley was also a triple winner, winning a close triple
jump (32' 3.75") contest and hurling her way to lopsided
wins in the shot put (43' 5.5") and discus (129' 4.25"),
breaking her own City records in both. Additionally, she qualified
for the PIAA championships in these events as well. Schenley's
Donel Durham won the boys' discus (109' 3.6")
and tied for first in the high jump (5' 8"). Allderdice's
Adanna Scott won the girls' high jump (4' 9")
and 300 intermediate hurdles (46.22), qualifying for the PIAA
championships in the latter. In other running events, Peabody's
Maurice Sales won the 100 meter (11.18) and 200 meter
(22.85) dashes, qualifying for the PIAA championships in both
events. Allderdice's Ian Wolfson won the 1600 meter
(4:39.64) and 3200 meter (10:32) runs and will compete in
the PIAA championship in the latter. Allderdice's Molly Ainsman
rounded out the multiple winners, capturing the 800 meter
(2:29.21) and 1600 meter runs (5:31.05). Summary

How did AA stack up against AAA at States?
Well, head-to-head it was 7 to 29, AA vs. AAA. But look behind
the stats, and many of the performances were close enough
to make a T&F fan wish for a Meet of Champs like our neighbors
get in NJ. What are your thoughts on this comparison
and a MOC?

15th at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in the 5000 3/29,
running a 16:34.24 NCAA DI Provisional Qualifying Time. The Ball
State soph was 3rd at the 1998 PA AAA Girls' State Championships
in 18:15.99 at Penn State, just nine seconds behind champ Liz
Churchville of Upper Merion.
March 31, 2002 - Six indoor state records set and
one tied during the 2002 Indoor Season. After Karina Francis,
William Penn, broke the seven-year old 60 dash record of 7.50
that was held by Joyce Bates of Simon Gratz with a 7.46, along
came Jakki Bailey of Kennett, going 7.44 at the Nike Indoor
Classic. William Penn's Juanita Broaddus took .03 off the 24.05
200 record of Jennifer Wilson of William Penn, who set the mark
in 1992. Sheena Gordon, McDowell, topped her Triple Jump Record
by 1.5", going 41-06; and she tied the 6-0 High Jump record of
Central Dauphin East's Hyleas Fountain, which had been set in
1999. The new boys' records were all in the relays, and two
belonged to Glen Mills. They went 1:28.49 in the 800 meter relay,
and 3:18.73 in the 1600 meter race. North Penn set the new
standard in the 3200 meter relay, going 7:52.05. See the PA
Indoor and Outdoor State Records page for boys and girls.
March 25, 2002 -Rob Robertson commits

February 3, 2002 - Great
Valley HS (Malvern) adds a meet the same day as the Judge
Relays. The meet is designed to introduce the region to their
spectacular new outdoor T&F facility. The meet will be held
4/20 - the Saturday before Penn Relays. So a tough choice, but
now there are two quality local meets. (For a closer look and

HERE COME THE ARCHIVES!
PennTrackXC is a volunteer website
run for the benefit of the high school athletes of PA.
Because we do not receive any funding assistance, we only
have limited time to dedicate to this site. In order to
'catch up' with a backlog of results, stories and photos we
have accumulated from prior seasons, we will be focusing
much of our energy during Indoor 2002 on that task. What
this means is that we will continue to provide basic
coverage of PA results, such as those below, plus limited
in-person coverage of select meets. Thanks for your
continued support. See you around the track.
