April 24 - Thursday
@ The Penn Relays - A remarkable first day for Pennsylvania
girls, as three Philly-area hurdlers went 2-3-4 in the 400 version
of the event. Nicole Leach, the West Catholic phenom who
broke 60-seconds for the first time just two weeks ago, ran a 59.00
to become the first American across the line. Merion Mercy senior
Tiffany Abney was 3rd in 59.18 and William Penn senior Christina
Smith was 4th in 59.89. Hershey senior Angie Saterstad
set about a 20-second PR by gaining 3rd in a very fast 3000, going
9:49.91. PA cleaned up the 5-6-7 spots with senior Emily Kruger,
Lampeter-Strasburg, and juniors Kylee Schuyler, Chambersburg,
and Francis Koons, Allentown Central Catholic. Four PA teams
advanced to the COA 4x800's, including Gwynedd-Mercy (9:20.48)

Township (9;22.14) and Hatboro-Horsham (9:23.55) in the

the 4x100 and 4x400 Championship of America races, taking their
heat of the 4x100 in 46.88 and the 4x400 in 3:47.21. West Catholic
ran 3:48.32 to make the COA.
Monday, April 21 - Public
League Relays @ Simon Gratz HS - Just two days off the
Father Judge Relays and three days before the first races of the
Penn Relays, William Penn had a little important work to

including a 3:49.9 4x400 tune-up over Girls' High, 6.5 seconds

Saturday, April 19 - 28th
Annual Father Judge Relays @ Father Judge HS (PennTrack
on site) - The rain had stopped and the sun came out early
as the Philly-area warm-up for the Penn Relays. William Penn
tuned out the competition, taking the 4x100 in 47.44 and the 4x400
in 3:52.72 (Kandis Worthington, 59.5, Christina Smith
58.2, Kneshia Sheard 58.3, Juanita Broaddus 56.8).
Broaddus had her right hamstring wrapped. She
apparently tweaked a hamstring at the Morgan State Relays in the
200. "She raced smart today. She knows what 90% means, and
she did that." said head coach Tim Hickey. Broaddus
should be totally ready for the Penn Relays this week. A
member of both relays, Christina Smith, also took wins in
the 400 Hurdles in 62.20 and the High Jump, clearing 5'05.00".
St. Hubert's ran alone in the DMR, going 12:26.45 (Rachel
Papin, 3:46.6, Kate Olney 61.9, Meghan Neary
2:28.9, Amy Kelly, 5:08.9). Archbishop Prendergast
took the 4x800 in 09:32.64 (Nicole O'Dea 2:19.0, Kelli Fierras
(FR), 2:21.8, Maureen Benner (FR), 2:26.8, Lindsay Dynow,
2:24.7). In the boys 4x800, Cardinal O'Hara ran the best
of the season in PA, going 7:57.36 (Matt Willard (FR) 1:59.9,
Bernie Rendler, 1:57.2, Dan Boyle, 2:02.8, Steve Hallinan,
1:57.1) while Archbishop Carroll used a strong Mile to capture
the DMR in 10:35.06. Results

59.15. Smith did win the 100 Hurdles in a fast 14.37 (14.75

SAM BAIR
OUT FOR SEASON
WITH STRESS FRACTURE
Photos
by James K. Wood

Sam Bair, takes his usual lead, but then, as the chase pack
senses a chance to do the unexpected, they close in. Two guys
beat Bair in the 800 for the first time since the Shaler star
was a freshman. The reason? A broken foot. The story
of the season-ending injury and the race
details.
|
Friday, April 11 - Butler
Invitational @ Butler HS (Boys) - Sam Bair lost his first
800 in Pennsylvania since his freshman year at the Butler Invitational
Friday night. The race began in usual Bair fashion with everyone
postioning themselves for 2nd. A 53.5 opening split will do that.
But during the final 200, Bair unexpectedly began to tie
up. He was caught with 60 meters to go by Mount Lebanon's Andrew
Davidson and Ian Fitzgerald of North Hills. Davidson
set a PR with his 1:54.5 win, while Fitzgerald edged Bair
at the line, both timed in 1:56.2. According to published reports,
Bair has inflamed tendons in his right foot which began to
bother him as soon as the race began. He apparently began to compensate
with his stride, which caused him to tire rapidly. Bair went
to Tennessee for an official visit this weekend and is unsure of
the time needed for recovery from his injury. Andrew Johnson,
North Hills, got off to a great start with a 10.7 100. In addition
to his 2nd in the 800, Fitzgerald won the 1600 in 4:25.37.
Jim O'Toole, North Allegheny, captured
the 3200 in a strong 9:23.6. Calvin
Littlejohn, Butler cleared 6-07 to win the High Jump.
And Mt. Lebanon took both the 4x400 and 4x800 Relays. Results.
Friday, April 11 - 1st
Annual Wildcat Invitational (Boys only) @ Latrobe HS - The Altoona
sprinting corps is strong this year. The result at this meet was
a double win by Brendan Perretta, who went 10.82 to win the
100 and 22.46 to take the 200. He and his teammates also captured
the 4x100 in 43.61 and the 4x400 in 3:30.90. Indiana's Eric Marx
won three events, the High Jump, clearing 6-01, the Long Jump (19-10.25),
and the Triple Jump (42-08.25). Results.
Friday, April 11 - College Sightings: In addition to Sean
Duffy and Mark Stallings racing the 5K at Bucknell 4/11, we
caught a pix of Ryan
Sheehan as the 'rabbit' in the 10K and Aaron
Rich and Justin Gindlesperger of Shippensburg, also in the 10K.

March 25, 2003 - While in New York, I got to meet Christopher Malcolm,
Reggie Witherspoon's (right) indoor coach. With PA's legendary William
Reed of Central High as the holder of the record Witherspoon broke
in the 400 at NSIC, it was only natural for me to cover the story
as discussion centered on which record to count. Reggie's was run
from a three-lane stagger, while Reed's was run from a two-lane
stagger. It also gave me the opportunity to interview Arnie Shiffrin,
Reed's high school coach. The story
was published March 25th on Dyestat,
along with some of the discussion in the T&F community, and
a response from Reggie Witherspoon.
Also while in New York, Matt "Jersey Guy" Soja and I talked
with record-setting Pentathlete Donovan Kilmartin (left) and his
coach at Team Idaho. The story
was also published on Dyestat.
"The
leaders were right in front of me, and I realized I could run
with them, and qualify."
- Jon Pastore - The
story
"I
have what it takes to compete here." - Ian Gottesfeld
after his first Foot Locker finals in San Diego, 12/14. The story.
November 3, 2002 - Philadelphia
Inquirer XC writer Ira Josephs contributes a great piece on our
sport in the November 3rd Sunday Inquirer -
"For
runners, the hills of Belmont are hallowed ground."
September 11, 2002
- The Millers of Manheim.
A pair of prodigies.
