- Plymouth-Whitemarsh Colonial Relays @ Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS -
Windy and cold weather pretty much limited
the chances that performances would be what the athletes and coaches were
shooting for. The Discus and Javelin were into the wind. The wind was behind
the high jumpers, throwing off their steps and timing. But it was still a
meet that kept moving at a good clip. In the Girls Relays, the top prizes
were split rather evenly, as William Penn (Juanita Broaddus photo by PennTrackXC) and host
Plymouth-Whitemarsh took home three golds apiece. Souderson,
Methacton and Gwynedd-Mercy took two golds each. For the Boys
Relays, any event that involved an 800 went to Bishop McDevitt, as
they the 4x400 and Pole Vault relays to tally five wins. Lower Merion
tallied three golds, while Lower Moreland had two golds. Results and Photo Page.
Saturday, April 6, 2002 - 1st Annual
Bruce Dallas Invitational @ Cumberland Valley HS - It was really
windy and cold for the meet. The wind was directly in the faces of the
sprinters. Coleman (Susquehanna Twp) edged out Langan (CV) in
the 100. Dane Miller from Schyulkill Valley threw 60' 1 1/2" in the
shot. CV ran 43.47 in the 4x100 edging out Cedar Crest. Jaren Hayes
(Cedar Crest) and Marcel Coleman (Susquehanna Twp) battled into the
wind in the 200. Coleman won in 22.52 and Hayes went 22:56. Joel
Thomas (Emmaus) won the mile in 4:28.94. Marques Pinkas (CV)
won the 110 Highs and the 300 IM. CV edged out Cedar Crest for the team
championship. On the girls side Cedar Crest returned the favor and
just outscored CV. CV's Nicole Erby won the 100, 200, and 400 and
Jennifer Gray won the 800 and 1600 but Cedar Crest was dominate in the
field. Summary by CV
Coach Bill Bixler - Results coming.
Saturday, April 6, 2002 - Council Rock
Invitational @ Council Rock HS - (boys only meet) For those who wanted individual events mixed with their
relays, the other windy and cold spot was eastern Bucks County at Council
Rock. The unusual format featured a 1500, 3000 and 5000. But it was the
shorter distances where close races abounded. Behind wins in the 400, 110
Hurdles, Sprint Medley, High Jump and Discus, William Tennent captured
the team title with 109 points. Individually, the 400 was the closest race of
the day as Troy Roberson, Tennent, and Abington's Lester Caesar
were both clocked in hand-times of 48.2, with Roberson getting the edge. Only
.1 in the 100, .2 in the 200 and .6 in the 800 separated the top two
finishers. In the Relays, Abington took both the 4x400 (3:23.1) and
4x800 (8:20.8). Results courtesy
of Bill Kenny.

Saturday, April 6, 2002 - Chestnut Hill
Relays @ Chestnut Hill Academy - Chestnut Hill Academy held their first relays, and visiting PCL
team Cardinal Dougherty thanked the hosts by taking five events. James
Jefferson (11.1) and Matt Miller (11.6) went 1-2 in the 100;
Johnson, Achille, Miller and Jefferson went 44.4 in the 4x100;, and in same
order to take the 4x400 in 3:33.5; Foley, Dom Jefferson, Garcia and Reilley
won the SMR in 3:47.5. And Steven Achille took the Long Jump with a leap of
19-10.50. Results in

Saturday, April 6, 2002 - Hill School
Relays @ The Hill School - The
Lawrenceville (NJ) boys and girls squads took both relays at the Hill School,
the boys by 25 over Blair School and 28 over the hosts, and the girls by 31
over Episcopal (VA). Blair and Hill each took three events, Lawrenceville
took just two, but had the depth to score. The L-ville girls took six
events. Results in

Saturday, April 6, 2002 - Central
League Relays @ Upper Darby HS - Strath Haven's guys have been giving some early signs of
depth, and possibly state potential. On 4/6 on a windy, cold day, they
dominated the Central League Relays, taking 11 of the 15 contested events.
Their wins included the Shuttle Hurdles (1:07.3), DMR (10:47.5), 4x100
(43.7), 4x200 (1:33.4), 4x400 (3:32.1), 4x800 (8:53.3), SMR (3:44.6), LJ
(38-11.75), TJ (83-04), HJ (11-04), DT (260-04). They would get 3rd in the
Shot Put Relay. In the girls competition, Upper Darby took three
running relays, the 4x200 (1:46.10, 4x400 (4;16.9) and 4x800 (10:20.3); while
Springfield took four of the Field Relays, SP (64-09.75), DT (184-01), JT
(173-08), and PV (16-0). Results in

Saturday, April 6, 2002 - Coed Relays @
Wissahickon HS - North Penn's boys
and girls squads didn't leave any doubt as they each won seven events. The
boys from North Penn dominated the running events, taking the 4x100
(43.1), Shuttle Hurdles (1:05.1), 4x200 (1;33.1), Sprint Medley (3:40.9)
4x800 (8:17.5), and DMR (11:07.8), plus the Long Jump Relay (39-00.25). Three
were three meet records on the girls side. Wissahickon, anchored Erin
Franklin, took the DMR in 12:57.6, and the 4x1600 in 22:06.9. North
Penn's Jess Johnson & Jackie Bryant combined in the Shot
Put relay to set a new MR by almost seven feet, going 79-00.25. North
Penn's girls also took the Shuttle Hurdles (1:17.6), The Sprint Medley
(4:17.3), the 4x800 (10:05.0), The Long Jump (28-06.75), The Discus (222-09),
and the Javelin (172-01.50). They also captured the true coed event with Deb
Fink, Kevvin Akins, Caitlin Belfield, and Matt Henderson boing 3:41.8 to win
a 4x400. Results in

Friday-Saturday, April 5-6, 2002 - PA Performances @ Colonial Relays @
The College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, VA -PA athletes victorious at Colonial Relays: Saterstad, Williams
Tegkowski, Prendie and Ryan girls, Rivers for the
boys. PA
Girls: DAY ONE: Angie Saterstad (pictured at left - Photo by Ed Saterstad) , running
unattached, conquered a very strong field in the girls 3000 at the Colonial
Relays in Williamsburg, VA. Running a 10:16.34, she beat NY soph Heather
Iatauro of Tri-Valley by three seconds, and PA's Kim Malcolm of Villa
Maria, by almost six. Also in the race was NJ star Jesse Mizzone of Passaic
Valley. Two other PA girls were also victorious on Day One, as Great Valley's
Jen Williams won the High Jump, clearing 5-5 (Megant Burke, State
College, T5 5-0); and Denise Tegkowski of Archbishop Ryan, won the
Long Jump, going 18-02.25. Other top 5 finishes for PA athletes included
Cardinal O'Hara's 4x800, 3rd in 9:43.61, and Great Valley, 4th
in 9:49.28. Chrissy Cook of O'Hara, was 3rd in the Shot Put with a
toss of 34-06.75. DAY TWO: Archbishop
Prendergast ran a nationally elite DMR time of 12:42.20 to win by over
11 seconds over Cardinal O'Hara (12:53.69). Villa Maria was 3rd
and Henderson, 4th. PA had success in the shorter relays, as
Archbishop Ryan took the 4x100 in 49.33. O'Hara was 2nd
(49.69), and Great Valley 5th (50.58). Kim Malcolm notched
another 3rd, going 5:10.79 in the Mile. Henderson SR Daina Hunt was
6th in the 100 Hurdles (16.62). After scratches by Ryan, O'Hara and Henderson
from the 4x400 finals, the 2nd fastest qualifer from Day One, Great
Valley, would finish 3rd in 4:04.86. Triple Jumper Denise
Tegkowski of Ryan, captured 2nd with a leap of
36-01.75. PA Boys:
DAY ONE: Segun Adewumi of State
College, was 2nd with his throw of 49-07 in the Shot Put. Upper Dublin's
Nehemiah Leary landed 3rd in the Long Jump, going 21-11.25 (Great
Valley's Galen Rivers-ND). Pat Clark, a Cedar Crest JR, was 4th
in a fast 3000 in 8:50.36. In the Pole Vault, Brian Walls, State
College, cleared 12-6 for 3rd, while Paul Ohm, Penncrest, was 4th at
the same height. O'Hara's boys took 4th in the 4x800 (8:08.20), while
Upper Dublin, LaSalle and Great Valley went 6-7-8. In
the High Jump, CJ Burman was 4th, clearing 6-2. DAY TWO: Rivers fared much better in the Triple Jump,
taking top honors with a 44-01.25 effort. Blake Williams of State
College was 5th (41-07.50). Williams' teammate, Mick Rehring, a
sophomore, was 2nd in the Discus with a toss of 132-01.00. Upper Dublin had
qualified for the finals of the 4x400, but scratched, as top PA qualifier
O'Hara finished 8th in 3:34.78. Upper Dublin concentrated on
putting a big effort into the DMR and came within two seconds of the win,
going 10:35.39. Great Valley (10:44.57) and Henderson
(10:44.94) were 6th and 7th, respectively. In the 4x100, Penncrest was
4th with their 44.91. Ted Segal, Great Valley, and Steve
Nichols, Penncrest, went 2-3 in the 110 Hurdles (15.37/15.58) in
different heats. PA runners were 6-7-8 in the mile (Joe Francisco,
O'Hara 4:31.16/Kyle Barnum, Great Valley, 4:31.25, Steve
Hallinan, O'Hara, 4:33.09). Complete Results courtesy of

Saturday, March 30, 2002 - PTFCA Classic @ Coatesville High School
- It wasn't
raining or snowing like last year. But it was certainly windy. And if you've
ever been to a meet at the site of the District 1 Championships at
Coatesville High School in Chester County, you know the wind whips off the
ridge, right into the faces of every finisher. Given the conditions, there
were some promising performances at a meet which attracts talent from a much
wider area than the Southeastern PA region. Considering the stiff breeze, all
the distance races were strong. Baldwin School's Julia Pudlin,
rounding into shape after missing XC and much of Indoor from a May 2001
injury, went through the mile in 5:21 in the 3200, taking control at that
point on a strong field that included Wissahickon's Erin Franklin, and
Coatesville's Kelly O'Connell. Pudlin went 10:59.01 for the win.
Franklin was 2nd in 11:08.22, and O'Connell 3rd in 11:28.31. Pudlin plans to
race in CA at the Arcadia meet in two weeks. For the boys, Joel Thomas
of Emmaus, from District 11, ran a strong 9:32.14 to hold off Upper
Moreland's Mark Mullelly (9:37.28) and Damony Giles of Simon
Gratz (9:37.88). In the Mile, Tim Erickson of Southern Lehigh went
4:21.83 for a 1.5 second edge on Strath Haven's Andrew Combs. Lewisburg's
Ashleigh Wetzel won the Mile in 5:10.16, as Hatboro's Janine
Ricci was just under three seconds back, and Gwynedd Mercy's Meghan
Bishop was less than two seconds behind Ricci. Takia Brooks
(pictured) of Abington won the short sprints,
taking the 100 in 12:49 by just .03 over West Catholic's Tiffany
Bradley; and the 200 in 25.16 by the same slim margin over, you guessed
it, Tiffany Bradely. (Something tells me this battle is just beginning).
Perry County's Jessica Kratzer of Greenwood, took three events,
including the Shot Put (36-6*), the Discus (118-04), and the Javelin
(129-07). Denise Tetkowski of Archbishop Ryan, also was a triple
victor, taking the 300 Hurdles in 47.35, the Long Jump with her 17-02*
effort, and the Triple Jump with a leap of 36-09*. In the Relays, Simon
Gratz boys and girls took the 4x100's, the guys in 43.08, and the girls
in 48.60. William Tennent's boys won the 4x800 in 8:00.31, while the
Haverford girls picked up where they left off last season, taking the
girls' race in 9:46.89. The Council Rock boys won the DMR in 10:40.35.

Saturday, March 23, 2002 - "Pop"
Emrey Warm-Up Relays @ Liberty HS - It was cold,
with winds howling up the 30 mph. But for the athletes, it was their first
chance to compete. So the wind and cold were cast aside, and the events
unfolded. In the girls' relays, Liberty took three of the eight running
events contended, winning the DMR, the Mid. DMR, and the 4x800. In the field
relays, Saucon Valley and Liberty each took two. On the boys' side,
Northampton, Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic each took two of the eight
running relays, while Stroudsburg captured two of the field relays. Results

Saturday, March 23, 2002 - Chichester
Relays @ Chichester High School - It was sunny, but windy. Not the
ideal spring weather we had experienced much of this winter. But it was the
first official meet of the outdoor season, and both girls' and boys' Great
Valley and the Strath Haven teams showed good depth. The Strath
Haven girls took the Division II team competition with Great Valley 2nd. The
Strath Haven guys won the Division I boys, downing a strong Cardinal O'Hara
squad. Ridley girls were tops in DI, while the Chichester boys defended their
home turf. Highlights with PDFs
of results.

1999 Coatesville grad Katie
Nowak finished 15th at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in the 5000
3/29, running a 16:34.24 NCAA DI Provisional
Qualifying Time. The Ball State soph was 3rd at the 1998 PA AAA Girls' State
Championships in 18:15.99 at Penn State, just nine seconds behind champ Liz
Churchville of Upper Merion.
March 31, 2002 -
Six indoor state
records set and one tied during the 2002 Indoor Season. After Karina Francis, William Penn, broke the seven-year old 60 dash
record of 7.50 that was held by Joyce Bates of Simon Gratz with a 7.46, along
came Jakki Bailey of Kennett, going 7.44 at the Nike Indoor Classic. William
Penn's Juanita Broaddus took .03 off the 24.05 200 record of Jennifer Wilson of
William Penn, who set the mark in 1992. Sheena Gordon, McDowell, topped her
Triple Jump Record by 1.5", going 41-06; and she tied the 6-0 High Jump record of
Central Dauphin East's Hyleas Fountain, which had been set in 1999. The new boys'
records were all in the relays, and two belonged to Glen Mills. They went 1:28.49
in the 800 meter relay, and 3:18.73 in the 1600 meter race. North Penn set the
new standard in the 3200 meter relay, going 7:52.05. See the PA Indoor
and Outdoor State Records page for boys and girls.

HERE COME THE
ARCHIVES!
PennTrackXC is a volunteer website run for the benefit of the
high school athletes of PA. Because we do not receive any funding
assistance, we only have limited time to dedicate to this site. In order to
'catch up' with a backlog of results, stories and photos we have
accumulated from prior seasons, we will be focusing much of our energy
during Indoor 2002 on that task. What this means is that we will continue
to provide basic coverage of PA results, such as those below, plus limited
in-person coverage of select meets. Thanks for your continued support. See
you around the track.

After 72 hours
off the 'net, it appears that PennTrackXC may soon have the sponsorship
support it needs to ensure its survival.
Just as Dyestat faced a similar
dilemma over a year ago, PennTrackXC could not continue with its
statewide, detailed coverage without gaining sponsorship of some
programming and other expenses.
Because we are philosophically
opposed to ever charging athletes and coaches for any service, we were
forced to assess our financial structure. With new support, we hope to
add enhancements and improvements to make PennTrackXC even more useful to
its core audience - the high school athletes.
So the bottom line is - looks like
we're back for good.
Thanks for all the emails and calls
of support.
